    • Silverdale Multi-Academy Trust has reluctantly decided to withdraw provisional plans to lead a new second school planned for the Bannerdale site.

      Published 25/11/16

Silverdale Multi-Academy Trust is aiming to strengthen and develop its links with primary and secondary schools in the area after the Board of Trustees reluctantly decided to withdraw provisional plans to lead a new second school planned for the Bannerdale site.

Silverdale Trust beat stiff competition to be chosen as the sponsor of a Local Authority commissioned new school – to be called Silverhill University School – in line with the council’s commitment to accommodate growing numbers of pupils in the south west of the city.

Having carried out due diligence on the financial model, Silverdale Trust felt that, given the latest changes to the financial capital build scheme, to proceed with the project would put the Trust at unacceptable financial risk.

Now the Board of Silverdale-Multi Academy Trust is focusing primarily on developing and expanding links with existing secondary and primary schools in the area.

Longstanding plans for a new wing at Silverdale which will allow the school to take extra secondary and sixth form students, and to upgrade the existing premises, will also be revisited.

Headteacher Roisin Paul said: “Following our rating as outstanding in our last Ofsted inspection, we are determined to give more students the opportunity to fulfil their potential within the Silverdale ethos.

“We continue to look to develop Silverdale Trust through more collaboration with existing schools. We want to strengthen our formal relationships with other schools and widen the Trust with schools who are interested and share our inclusive and aspirational ethos.

“The continued aim is to create a family of schools who will work in partnership to provide outstanding educational experiences to the young people of Sheffield, more high quality professional development for staff and a joined up and proactive teacher training, recruitment and retention strategy.

“We are disappointed that we can’t continue with Silverhill, for which we had such a strong vision. But the latest financial developments mean that the risk to the Multi-Academy Trust has become too great.”

The vision for extending Silverdale in the longer term includes new facilities for the English and Modern Foreign Languages departments, a bigger dining room, a dedicated sixth form study and social space and conference facilities for Sheffield Teaching School Alliance.

At the same time, the current building would be remodelled to create four new science laboratories and extended PE facilities.

      Published 10/11/16

We would like to remind you of our procedures in the event of adverse weather conditions being forecast or experienced across our local area:

We aim to open as usual every day.  In the event of adverse weather conditions we will follow our usual procedures.  Please be aware that:

      • Weather conditions are monitored on an ongoing basis and the site is checked regularly
      • We will use the school website, Sheffield City Council website,  e-mail to parents, radio stations (Radio Sheffield and Hallam) to communicate any changes

Please do not ring school to enquire regarding status - we are open unless the web, e-mail or radio says not.  In the event of an early closure, we will use the same means to communicate with parents.

In making any decision regarding change to our usual arrangements, we are mindful of the health and safety of all concerned as well as understanding of the difficulties families may have in terms of planning in advance, finding childcare etc.  We will do our very best to make sure that any decisions are the right ones given the information available to us and that they are communicated to you in good time.  We are sure that you will also have contingency plans in place – let’s hope that we don’t have to use them!

Parents need to make their own judgement regarding the safety of their journey to and from school.

Thank you for your support and cooperation.

      Roisin Paul, Headteacher

    • New schools sponsors announced

      Published 21/07/16

The Regional Schools Commissioner has decided that Silverdale Multi Academy Trust and Reach4 Academy Trust will be the sponsors for the new schools in south west and north east Sheffield.

The announcement follows a selection process run by the Department for Education. Academy trusts were invited to apply to run the new schools, which are needed to meet the rising demand for school places in Sheffield, in March 2016.

Sponsors showed that they could meet the Sheffield Asks, the Council’s expectations of new sponsors, which include demonstrating their ability to improve the outcomes of local children and commitment to working with families, other schools, the local community and the council.

The trusts will now begin the planning process to make sure the new schools are open in September 2018.  Silverdale Multi Academy Trust will run the south west one for children aged 11 to 18. Reach4 will run the north east school which will be a through school for children aged 2 to 18.

As well as working with the council on the design and build, one of the first priorities for the Academy Trusts will be to work with the council, other schools and parents in setting the admissions arrangements in the Autumn term.

Councillor Jackie Drayton, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families at Sheffield City Council, said: “I’m excited that we are building two new schools in the areas of the city where we need school places and look forward to working in partnership with the sponsors to help achieve our ambition for Sheffield. That is every child, young person and family achieves their full potential by raising expectations, attainment and enabling enriching expectations.

“I believe working with Silverdale Multi Academy Trust and Reach4 Academy Trust we have a wonderful opportunity to make a real difference to the life chances of many children and families in our City.

“We are looking forward to working with them the academies for this exciting challenge ahead.”

Roisin Paul, Executive Headteacher of Silverdale Multi-Academy Trust and Headteacher of Silverdale school said: “We are delighted that the Regional Schools Commissioner has placed their trust in Silverdale Multi Academy Trust to sponsor the new secondary school in south west Sheffield.

“We appreciate what an important responsibility this is and are committed to ensuring that the Silverdale ethos of outstanding achievement for all, will be at the heart of the new school. Every child who enters the school will be part  of an outstanding learning experience, drawing on the skills and talents we already have in the Silverdale team.

“We see the new school as being at the heart of the local community. Building on the excellent expertise and experience of Silverdale School, we will work with people locally to create more than just a school, but a community hub that provides resources and opportunities for everyone.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for staff, students and the local community. We look forward to listening to everyone’s ideas about how we can ensure the school is a great success and deliver on our vision of another outstanding school for Sheffield.”

Libby Nicholas, CEO of Reach4 Academy Trust, said: “ We are absolutely delighted to be working with Sheffield City Council on this exciting new school to serve families in the north east of Sheffield.

“We are now working with more than a dozen academies in the region, and are committed to providing every single one of our children and young people with an education that offers inspiration beyond measure. We look forward to working with the council, local schools and families to establish this brand new school and make that offer readily available to even more young people.”

    • Art Department London Trip

      Published 11/11/15

On the 23rd October  the Art Department took 28 A-Level students to London for two days to soak up some culture and experience some of the best galleries and museums in the world.  It was a jammed packed couple of days but the students took it all in their stride and were a credit to Silverdale School and their peers.  From experiencing the drama and excitement around the Channel exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery, to visiting the beautiful V&A and the thought provoking Tate Britain, the students took inspiration to develop their own work and discuss the merit of ‘Art’.  As a treat the students also went out to dinner then over to the West End to watch Thriller, winding their  way through the busy streets of London on a Friday evening and taking in the atmosphere .  All the excitement and activities meant that DVD’s and popcorn on the bus were a welcome treat for the long journey back!   Roll on next year!
